Jonishan were contracted to the Sydney Catchment Authority to repair 52m of canal batter at Raby Road, Catherine Fields. The Upper Canal is classified as a heritage structure. Extreme caution was taken during demolishing and removing the existing lining so as not to further damage any other components.
This project involved excavation of loose material behind the lining, removal of the batter, stabilisation, replecement and compaction. Where there was a shortage of suitable material, Jonishan arranged importation, placement and compaction. Dewatering , shoring and installation of supports prevented collapse of adjacent embankments and canal sections. Construction also required provision of pore pressure relief wells and a reinforced concrete lining on the canal batter. Reformation and extensions of coping drains to natural drainage of 130m and site restoration completed works.
Canal shut down times were limited requiring tight time schedules to be adhered to.
